Where to Marry in Regional Victoria: A Planner’s Guide to the Regions
Regional Victoria is spoilt for choice, which is its own kind of problem. When every region looks beautiful on a screen, it’s hard to know where to start. Here’s how we’d think about it — less a ranking, more a guide to the feel of each.
Yarra Valley — the classic. An easy drive from Melbourne, all vineyards, rolling hills and cellar doors, with a deep bench of venues and a food-and-wine reputation that does a lot of the heavy lifting for you. If you want somewhere your guests already know and love, this is it. The trade-off is popularity: the best dates book early.
Mornington Peninsula — coast and country in one. Vineyards and olive groves through the Red Hill hinterland, beaches twenty minutes away, and a relaxed-but-polished feel. Lovely for couples who want a wedding that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still looks the part.
Macedon Ranges and Daylesford — moody and green. Cooler, a little wilder, with gardens, grand old properties and a hint of the English countryside. Beautiful in autumn. Worth planning around the weather, which is part of the charm and part of the work.
Bellarine Peninsula — quieter than the Mornington, with wineries, water views and a slower pace. A good pick if you love the coast-meets-vineyard look but want somewhere a touch off the beaten track.
Gippsland and the high country — for couples who want space and a sense of escape. Bigger landscapes, fewer crowds, and often a private-property or marquee element, which means more to organise but a day that feels entirely your own.
A few things to weigh, wherever you land. Travel for your guests — a stunning venue three hours away will shape your guest list and your accommodation. Accommodation nearby — regional weddings usually need a plan for where everyone sleeps. What the venue includes — some are full-service; others are a beautiful empty space you’ll need to fill with hire, catering and a wet-weather plan. And the season — the same paddock is a different wedding in February and in June.
That last point is where a lot of couples underestimate the work. A blank-canvas property or a marquee wedding can be the most personal day of all, but it comes with logistics a packaged venue quietly handles for you — power, parking, bump-in, bump-out, and a backup if the weather turns.
